Another Late Night in Yucaipa!I don't know what it is about this summer. The nights are getting shorter. Way shorter. And colder too. This is really an odd year. I believe that we are heading into an early fall. Leaves are dropping off of trees. It's incredible. And I'm not complaining. This summer was so mild.
So, I am out on the mountain, trying to time my sunsets. I want to hit it just right. But it is getting more and more difficult. It is SO much more easier to do a sunrise painting, except for having to get out of bed in the morning. But, if you do a sunrise painting, you can quickly put in your shadow areas, and then leisurely put in your light areas.
to paint a sunset, that's almost true in reverse. You must move quickly. Because once it is dark out, that's it. You are done! At one point, during dusk, you can't even mix proper colors.
So, why do I like painting sunsets? You have to think fast. The painting moves along quickly. There is no time for second guessing. Because I paint so rapidly, my paintings don't look fussed about at all. Everything is clean. The paint goes down, and that's it. No mucking about. Mucking only creates confusion. Values and legibility get lost in the translation.
Live, love and paint,
