Prospect Park Warning!

WARNING! WARNING! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!

Yesterday I was up at the Carriage House in Prospect Park. I was in the middle of my walk when I was stopped by Citizens' Patrol.

They wanted to know the basics, who I was and what I was doing in the park. I told them I'm here frequently painting.

They wanted to warn me about a rash of "Smash and Grabs" that were happening at this park. Basically, the criminals watch us get out of the car, and go to the hiking trail. They witness whether or not we take our bags with us. Fannypacks, purses, etc. Then when it is all clear, they smash our car windows and rob us. I'm not sure if I was told 400 happened this month or this year. But anyway, that's a large number!

The Citizens Patrol would like us to report all suspicious activity to them/Redlands PD.

Anyhow, this is a drawing I created at Prospect Park. It is a study of a Palm Tree. What drew my interest was the circular shape of the leaves. I couldn't resist painting it. I used a black watercolor pencil and Arches 140 lb. cold pressed. Last Month, I may not be painting there for a while.

Guys if you hear of anything happening at Prospect Park, let me know, and I will be sure to post and get the word out.

Thanks,

Live, love and paint, (and leave my car alone!)

Loma Linda Does it Again!

I can't believe how many top notch artists Loma Linda Art Association has been able to host.

Last weekend, we had the pleasure of meeting Joseph Stoddard. A wonderful watercolorist, who has had a few books published. In the second photo, he is holding his latest book, "Expressive Color". I was thrilled to buy an autographed copy.

Joseph has an interesting style of demoing. He is at times, funny, serious and always delightful. He walked us through his process step by step. In one of the photos, you can see his sketchbook. He usually draws on location, and then fills it in with color later. he had a variety of sketchbooks filled, from small to large. He is always working.

One of the things that I enjoyed was how his style has changed throughout the years. It was great to see how he has grown as an artist. He pushes himself to excel.

Next month at Loma Linda, we shall have Ed Sotello joining us. Ed too is an amazing artist. He is fun, personable and caring. I mean, besides being an award-winning artist:) He's also a good friend and a really neat person to know.

Adventure - Nevada

Back from Laughlin

Just a couple of notes, now that I'm back. Laughlin is just a wonderful place. Of course, right now, the temperatures are rising to over 100 degrees plus. Deep in the heart of summer, temps go all the way up to the 130's. So, I will definitely stay away for a couple of months!

Always, some beautiful places to paint. I love the apes that line the river walk with their huge flames that light the way at night. Can you imagine how much fun it would be to come up with a clever painting of such a walkway?

The riverwalk also has a few wonderful covered gazebos. I would love to sit under one and paint for the day. Of course, that would be followed by trips to some really good restaurants.

In addition to the view, a few other highlights of this trip were, listening to the Beach Boys in concert. They can really put on a show!

The other highlight was to go to the Avi Resort and Casino. On Friday night they have all you can eat seafood for $13.99. The king crab legs were fantastic! The desert was also wonderful. They had a wonderful woman, over a hot stove. You told her what you wanted. She threw in a little butter, brown sugar and all types of berries and chocolate chips. When it melted and carmelized, she poured it over French Vanilla ice cream. How delicious.

Well, I'm going to close with this fantastic view of the river. I will be posting a few pics of paintings that I have painted. Mostly sunsets. I was so happy with the quality of these paintings, that I took them to the framer without taking photos first.

Well, lesson learned. Next time I will show some more patience and take photos of my paintings first, before I get things framed.

Painting Adventures - Nevada

Painting along the Colorado River!

What a great week's vacation I had. I went out to Laughlin, Nevada. One of my favorite places to visit. In addition to very inexpensive hotel rooms, great food, the views couldn't be better.

The Colorado River divides this area into Nevada on one side, (with the gambling, and Arizona on the other side. I enjoy strolling along the river walk, finding a place where no one is at, and just opening up my paint box to paint. The morning air is crisp, paint fast. Right now the temperature is up to 100 plus degrees by the time the afternoon hits.

There are so many wonderful places to paint. The River, the mountain ranges, tiny inlets, and gorgeous fish swimming in the water. They have a few shaded gazebos, that one can sit in to draw or paint. Or simply watch the graceful flow of the water as it drifts by.

Nightfall comes, and with it a cool breeze. You can take in a show, look at classic cars, or gamble. At the Aquarius casino, we watched a Beach Boys concert. We had the best seats in the house.

Laughlin is one of my favorite places for so many reasons. This is one of the best kept secrets in America. If you are looking for a great place to relax, Laughlin is definitely worth taking a look at.

Today is my 1st day back. Feeling so much better. This evening was another great sunset, so I did a wonderful mini sunset painting.

While I've been laid up, I decided to study blogger. Today, I remixed my flower series paintings. In the future, my blog will be getting alot more jazzier and interactive.
