Great Opportunities

Hi Everyone!

I thought I would post a few things real quick!

I came across a wonderful site. On this website it has FREE drawing lessons. What makes these lessons so unique is that they are specifically geared toward drawing the city scenes.

Now, the last plein air paint out that I went to, alot of the artists were having problems with one and two point perspective. I thought that this website would help. It has alot of FREE videos on it. So just click on FREE DRAWING LESSONS to begin drawing dynamic cityscapes.

Really Good Sales Opportunity:

Judith sent me this info on a great opportunity for artists. Now, I know the venue, and there is going to be alot of foot traffic. It is a FREE opportunity. However, some artists said that they were told that they need insurance, for a cost of $50, and some artists were told that they were not. I suggest you call. Here is a reprint of Judith's letter:

You were asking for information on art sales opportunities. I was contacted by Kim Martinez from KFROG radio station, about an opportunity on July 4th. Stater Bros, Pepsi, KFROG and the Auto Club have partnered to put together a fair type event at the Fontana Speedway. It will include music, fireworks, car cruise, and various vendors. They are having a zone for art-related vendors. Kim has contact RAA only, and they have lots of space for anyone who wants to set up a booth to show art. They aren't charging the artists to show, and aren't taking a % for anything sold. They are wanting to have a cultural side to the event, a "ladies zone", so it's not all about cars for the guys.
If anyone is interested, they should call Kim Martinez at (909..., and she will email or mail out a registration form. If you have canopies, there's space for that, or whatever set up you wish.
This is a little different from our usual art venues, but could be a good opportunity to get out there and show what you do. And, remember, it is FREE!

Great job, Judith! Here's a link for those of you who aren't familiar with Judith's Photography

Another Really Good Art Opportunity:

And Laurie Phillips sent me a great opportunity for artists, but I'm posting too late for it. HOWEVER, TAG - The Art Group of Moreno Valley is doing some tremendous work on getting artwork shown. I believe that this Art Group is growing and doing great things for artists.

If you are interested in showing your work, contact Laurie, the President of TAG - The Arts Group of Moreno Valley E-mail her at tagofmv@live.com or Skype her at

All right, until I can get out and paint,

I'm a Dreamer

What does Plein Air Mean?
On the surface, that's a simple question. To paint outdoors.

What does Plein Air mean to ME?

Ultimate Joy!

Original Watercolor
6"X8" (SOLD)

And maybe that's why plein air has not only caught on in Southern California, where the weather is close to perfect, but all around the world! It's funny. I counted thousands of art clubs around the world, and thought that those numbers were impressive. Did you know that ALOT of art clubs now have a Plein Air Division?

What makes plein air painting so addictive. Well, if you are an outdoorsy person like me, you get to hike, explore and paint! Some plein air artists strap there paint box to there canoes and boats and paint as they meander down the river. Super-Cool!

I Have A Dream!
Can you imagine, spending 2 weeks camped at Yosemite. You wake up every morning, the sunrise is beautiful. For painters, that morning light bathes everything into gorgeous yellow hues that GLOW. Get your paint box out there, and paint for a couple of hours. After about 2 hours, that fabulous light and shadow show is gone. So now, it is time to go for a hike. Grab up your poles, camera, and lets go. There are meadows, and bison and waterfalls.

Everything is alive. It is refreshing for the spirit. You breathe in the smells. You've painted, which that's output, like exhaling. Now, you hike, you're inhaling. It is time to "refill your art tanks". That's balance to an artist. If you don't reenergize yourself, tonight, when that gorgeous sunset needs to be painted, you won't have it in you to paint.

I remember a couple of years ago, being camped out, in the middle of winter at the Grand Canyon. Not alot of hardy souls there. But, hey, it was so worth it. I wish I had pics. The snow, the deers walking by. The spiritual sense of the native Americans being there. The extreme colors/contrast that only winter could cause. Those warm canyon walls against that cold snow. Gorgeous!

Yes, the Grand Canyon in winter can be a deeply spiritual event.

My Past Life

Old Airbrush Paintings

Hi, alot of people have asked me how did I start off in Painting. Have I always been talented? (I Laugh!) Where did I learn to paint, and draw? I learned to paint and draw from reading great books and magazines. Alot of these paintings are lessons out of books, tapes, videos, etc. Copying other peoples artwork is a great way to learn.

Have I always been talented? Well, to answer the questions, NO! I haven't always been talented. A couple of years ago, a few of my friends got me interested in drawing. They were so sure that I could learn how to draw, and I was certain that I could NOT learn how to draw! How is that for positive thinking! Anyhow, I wanted to create photorealistic animal portraits so badly, that I forced myself to learn how to draw. Thank my lucky stars for such good friends!

Airbrushing is alot, (to me), like drawing. I've often thought of my airbrush as a pencil with air. So, it wasn't difficult for me to make a leap from drawing to painting. I took to it like a duck takes to water. I was thrilled with my results.

However, once I accomplished photorealism, I was no longer satisfied with my paintings. Now, I wanted my artwork to be expressive.

So, that is where I am at today with watercolor. I absolutely love it. For me, it is not only expressive, and fun, but quite portable too.

Well,

Time to get Excited!

Sumer is Here!

Right now is the best time to get out there and paint! It is not too hot, and it is not too cold!
I want to encourage all of my readers to pick up their sketch boxes, watercolors, oils or whatever you got, and get out there and paint, before it is too hot!

Yeah - Art-A-Fair

The beach is going to be GREAT. Next week in Laguna Beach begins the Art-A-Fair. Now, if you have never been to the Art-A-Fair, well, let me tell you, it's a great treat! Hundreds of artists gather together to sell their beautiful artwork. I'm lucky, I was invited to Premier Night on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. I can't wait. This is the BEST art show. Why? Because it is not oil paintings only, or seascapes only. It is everything imaginable, from Airbrushers to Ceramists!

Yeah - the Sawdust Festival. I LOVE the Sawdust Festival!

Don't forget, next door, during the weekends, is the Sawdust Festival. Now that is one fun adventure! They have live music, jugglers, artists. It's great fun! One year, when I was there, they had a glass blower doing a live demonstration. Then, if you wanted to try your hand at ceramics, they set you up. The same for printmaking! And usually, it is no charge.

I really enjoy the opportunity to try other forms of artwork. It gives me a great respect for artists that work in other mediums!

So summer is here! That means, not only should we go out and paint, but we should also go out and appreciate other artists artwork!

Live, love and paint,

Terry

Strange Weather Sketching

Enjoying Sketching while the Weather is Strange!

Well, they say that it never rains in Southern California. Well, I'm here to tell you, that that is not true. It does rain in Southern California! However, out here in Redlands, it seems to only rain enough to dirty your car.

I mean, a few days ago, we have the weirdest thunder and lightning storm. Every half an hour the skies would grumble, and then the tiniest lightning strike.

So I don't like painting on overcast days. Everything is grey. And I can't push the distance, and you know how I love to push distance in a painting. So, on rainy days like it has been, I just pull out the old sketchbook and get a couple of sketches in.

I don't use anything special. Just regular sketching paper, a 2B pencil and a kneaded eraser. That's it.

Well, this weather is trying. This is a cold June. But don't worry, July is right around the corner, and you know what that means. . . 100+ temperatures and painting at the beach.

Live, love and paint,

Terry

What's New & Exciting!

Sharing Inspirational Ideas & Selling Your Artwork:

This week I've got inundated with alot of artistic e-mails, so I'd like to spend a few minutes sharing them with you.

The first is a link to a short, fun video of sheepherders using sheep being herded as their paintbrush. I don't know if you have ever heard of the outdoor artist Andy Goldsworthy? He is an artist, but instead of using paint and brushes, he uses twigs and snow and leaves and ice. Anyhow, I digress. My friend Carlene sent this. It is artwork using live sheep. It's great - Here is the link:

Enjoy it, I know you will.

Here is a copy of the Letter I received from Laurie Phillips with the Art Group of Moreno Valley:

"Hi Terry

It's me - Laurie Phillips. Thought I'd let you know what we are up to in Moreno Valley. What we are actually doing is trying to let our population here know that there are arts in our city. It's been that if you wanted to participate in any of the arts that you had to go elsewhere - and most of the time, the people just didn't go elsewhere. Some of the ones in our art group never got out of their own backyard. So we decided to bring it to them. At least for the next few months.

Our Group is very fortunate because we have a space at the Mall. So what we are doing is having shows (exhibits) every 5 or 6 weeks plus we are doing special events such as An Evening of Poetry and a drawing workshop. This month we are also going to have an all day affair and have music, a children's poetry session, working artists and a reception which is all open to the public. And I have attached our flyer. I know it's a bit late since take-in is Monday - but we are close you know. And if you want your art to be seen it definitely will be. We are averaging 500 visitors a month and we are on a short schedule of only 4 days. Our turnout of artists has been very good and I find take-in days are fun - lot's of work - but what a great time.

What is really interesting is that most of our visitors really look at all the art and if they have children with them, they talk with them about it. Many of them stop and talk with us. This has kept me quite busy but it is so very rewarding. I just wish I had a few more volunteers (doesn't everyone!).

So come try it - you'll like it.

Laurie Phillips

What a Beautiful Day

Perfect Weather for Painting!

It Never Rains In California?

I beg to differ! Last month out here in Yucaipa, we had days of up to 100 degrees. Not my favorite. I like it hot, but not too hot! That was at the beginning of the month. Well, June is turning into something pretty amazing.

It's called June gloom. I don't think the title fits. Two days ago, what a spectacular thunder storm, complete with lightning. It was mother nature showing her awesome self. Today, you look up, and these beautiful blue skies, with deep huge clouds. Amazing! Maybe tomorrow I will get out there and paint. Love cloud paintings,

Trailers for Sale or Rent

Trailers for Sale or Rent !!!

One of my favorite things to sketch and paint are old buildings. Now, in California, we don't have alot of old buildings. I mean, I don't believe there are many over a couple of hundred of years old.

But that's okay, I have found alot of buildings to paint that have personality.

Trailers Parks that have been built after World War 2 are gorgeous. They have that futuristic look to them. Sort of like Cadillacs with fins. These treasures offer the George Jetson type of thinking. Remember, by this time, we are supposed to be driving around in our Flying Cars.. .

Another thing that I enjoy about these trailers is they reflect there owners personality. They are painted all sorts of beautiful colors. Not like residential areas where everything is painted the same color. How Boring! I think that is the worst thing - track homes - all looking the same

Just look at this cute little mobile home. I love the way the license plate looks. I mean, after 50 years, there's a little tilt there, and a little tilt here. How wonderful.

Live, love and paint,

Terry
